Tvashtri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tvashtri ( Sanskrit त्वष्टृ Tvaṣṭṛ m. “Former”, “Former”) is the divine artist in the Vedic religion who forged the thunder weapon Vajra for Indra . The three Ribhus , deified artists, are both admired and envied by him because they had quadrupled his sacrificial cup, which he had forged for the gods. As an artist he was identified with Vishvakarman in the late Vedic period .

Tvashtri is not only considered the creator of weapons and treasures, but he also creates the sperm, the embryo in the stomach and is even considered the creator of all living beings and the whole world. As such, he is considered identical to Prajapati .

He is described as an old man with beautiful arms who carries an iron ax. Saranyu , his daughter, became Vivasvat's wife . His three-headed son Vishvarupa was killed by Indra while attempting to dethrone him. From the dead body of his son Tvashtri created the dragon demon Vritra , who is also killed by Indra.

A volcanic region of Tvashtar Paterae on Jupiter's moon Io is named after Tvashtri , as well as (2491) Tvashtri , an asteroid in the main belt.
