Dover is a city that owns the main English port on the Strait of Dover on the English Channel . Located in the extreme southeast of England, the city is the closest English city to mainland continental France and France . This location gives Dover a special strategic importance. During World War II , the city was exposed to enemy attacks from long-range cannon fire, which took place from the French bank, whose distance across the canal is only 21 miles ("Twenty-One Miles").

On August 12, 1940 there was a major attack by the German Air Force on radar stations near Portland and Dover and other coastal targets. This attack heralded the second phase during the Battle of Britain .

The film, made in 1942, addresses how the city deals and lives with these enemy attacks and destruction.

background

The film was later re-cut and given the title Dover .

Dover was subjected to long-range cannon attacks more than 3,000 times from the French bank during World War II. 216 residents were killed and over 10,000 houses damaged. A large number of caves and tunnels in the chalk cliffs surrounding the city were used as protective bunkers at that time. During the evacuation of Dunkirk ( Operation Dynamo ) the military headquarters were also located there. Due to its location, the city was also known as the "Hellfire Corner" during the war.

Award

At the Academy Awards in 1943, the British Ministry of Information was nominated for an Oscar in the category “Best Documentary” , but had to go to the productions Battle of Midway , Kokoda Front Line! , Moscow Strikes Back and Prelude to War .
