Twinkies

Twinkies are cream-filled cupcakes that were manufactured and marketed by the largest American bakery, Hostess Brands , and are now manufactured by Saputo Incorporated 's Vachon Inc. in Canada.

history

Twinkies were around 1930 in Schiller Park ( Cook County, Illinois (later Hostess) invented) by James A. Dewar, a baker of Continental Bakeries. When Dewar noticed that many machines that make cream-filled strawberry cakes shut down outside of the strawberry season, he developed a banana- filled snack and named it Twinkie. During World War II , bananas became scarce and the bakery replaced the filling with vanilla cream . This change proved so successful that even after the banana shortage ended, vanilla cream was used.

After filing for insolvency for the second time at the beginning of 2012 , Hostess Brands announced on November 16, 2012 that the company would be closed and the approximately 18,500 employees would lose their jobs. According to the company, changing consumer tastes, high raw material costs and, ultimately, a nationwide strike were responsible for the shutdown. When the company was closed, no more Twinkies were produced in the USA. However, they were still manufactured in Montreal by Saputo Incorporated's Vachon Inc., which owns the product rights for Canada. After individual parts of the group of companies were sold in the course of bankruptcy, the production of Twinkies and other products was resumed.

Trivia

The term Twinkie Defense has entered the court language . It was coined by satirist Paul Krassner in 1979 during the trial of Dan White, who murdered Councilor Harvey Milk and Lord Mayor George Moscone in November 1978 in San Francisco . Krassner's inappropriately summarized arguments of the defense are: White was insane because of the consumption of sugary foods.
