The Type 74 ( Japanese 74 式 自 走 105mm り ゅ う 弾 砲 , 74-shiki jisō 105 mm ryūdanhō , German "Type 74 self-propelled 105mm artillery") is an self-propelled howitzer of the Japanese ground self-defense forces .

The self-propelled howitzer with a 105 mm cannon is essentially based on the Mitsubishi Type 73 armored transport vehicle , which was developed at the same time. Komatsu developed the chassis, while Japan Steel Works was responsible for the weapon and turret. The first prototype was completed in 1969/70. In 1974 the introduction into the army took place. In total, only 20 units were built. At the same time, the Type 75 was introduced, the main weapon of which had a 155 mm caliber.

The Type 74 is now no longer in service and has been completely retired. By 2008, 17 units of this model were still in use by the army. The Japanese ground forces are focusing on the use of a single large-caliber, namely the modern Type 99 self-propelled howitzer.

Only 30 storeys could be carried in the vehicle. The equipment also included an NBC protection system. A special feature is the amphibian suitability, which was achieved by attaching floating bodies on the outside.
