The Type 99 ( Japanese 99 式 自 走 155mm り ゅ う 弾 砲 , 99-shiki jisō 155 mm ryūdanhō , German "Type 99 self-propelled 155mm artillery") is a self-propelled howitzer of the Japanese ground forces . It was developed as the successor to the Type 75 and has been in series production since 1999.
development
Development began in 1985 to replace the Type 75 self-propelled howitzer. The order for development went to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (hull and final assembly) and Japan Steel Works , which developed the turret and the 155mm main weapon. To save costs, the chassis of the Mitsubishi Type 89 armored personnel carrier was used for the howitzer . The first four vehicles were delivered in 1999, and by the end of 2008 the JGSDF should have around 50 vehicles.
technology
The main weapon with 52 caliber lengths can fire standard projectiles 30 km, extended-range full-bore projectiles 38 km. The maximum rate of fire is 6 rounds / min. The small number of crews suggests a car loader. Aluminum armor protects the occupants from handguns and fragments.
The Type 99 ASV (Armored Supply Vehicle) based on the MLRS chassis was also developed to provide support. It transports ammunition supplies for the howitzer, which have to be reloaded manually.
