The Mercedes type was a type of bulk carrier of the Bremer Vulkan built between 1973 and 1983 .
details
The type of ship was an oil / bulk cargo / ore freighter , also an OBO carrier (from the English Oil Bulk Ore for oil, bulk cargo and ore) with nine holds , superstructures and an engine room located very aft. The shipyard constructed the more modern ship design at the beginning of the 1970s on the basis of the bulk carriers Emma Oldendorff and Eckert Oldendorff built in 1969/70 . It was intended for use in conventional bulk transport, but also especially for particularly flexible services with mixed cargo volumes of crude oil, ore and other bulk cargo. The cargo holds were closed with side-opening sliding hatch covers from the Tell system; the cargo hold volume was 91,686 m³ in the conventional bulk shipment and 50,437 m³ in the ore shipment. 93,313 m³ were available for oil loads.
The propulsion of the ships consisted of a two-stroke diesel engine that acted directly on the individual fixed propellers. Various types from MAN and Burmeister & Wain were installed in the series .
The type ship Mercedes , which cost around 60 million marks , was commissioned by the correspondent ship owner Friedrich A. Detjen from Hamburg and Klaus-Michael Kühne of the forwarding company Kuehne + Nagel for their shipping company MS "Mercedes" and on August 17, 1973 to Seetransport GmbH in Hamburg Unimar line agency delivered as correspondent shipper. In the following years ten more new buildings of the type with around 78,000 tons of load capacity were built.
