In the early 1960s, HAPAG ordered three motor ships of the same type from Howaldtswerke Hamburg . On October 31, 1961, the shipping company was able to take over the type ship Blumenthal from the shipyard. Half a year later, on April 17, 1962, Wolfsburg completed the series.
Use at HAPAG
Until 1970, the three ships were used as planned by HAPAG and, when it merged with NDL, were taken over by the new Hapag-Lloyd .
Later career
In the summer of 1971, Hapag-Lloyd sold all three sister ships to Portuguese shipping companies. Two of the ships were sold for demolition in 1986/87. The former Blumenthal remained in service until 1992, then was initially hung up in Luanda and finally partially canceled there.
technology
The ships of the series were conventional general cargo ships with superstructures just aft amidships above the propulsion system and versatile loading facilities. The ships were equipped with numerous conventional loading booms as well as a heavy lift boom to take over heavy lifts. The hatches were closed with MacGregor hatch covers.
