Tyrone Davis
Tyrone Davis (born May 4, 1938 in Greenville , Mississippi , † February 9, 2005 in Hinsdale , Illinois ) was an American soul singer and an important representative of Chicago soul .
Life
Tyrone Davis was born on a farm near the city of Greenville , Mississippi, and grew up in Saginaw, Illinois. In 1959 he moved to Chicago to work as the chauffeur for the blues musician Freddie King .
Davis made his first musical experiences as a temporary worker for some local blues and soul greats before he started his singing career in Chicago clubs. He released his first single Suffer in 1965 under the name "Tyrone the Wonder Boy". After the small record company with which Tyrone Davis was under contract had to give up due to the owner's death, he went under contract with Dakar Records, a former sub-label of Atlantic Records .
His first single there, Can I Change My Mind , originally the B-side, became his first hit, reaching number 1 on the R&B charts and number 5 on the US pop charts. From then on, Davis shaped Chicago soul with its gentle and orchestral way. His biggest hit, Turn Back The Hands Of Time from 1970, reached number 3 in the pop charts.
A year after Tyrone Davis hit his third hit with Turning Point in 1976, he joined CBS . There his songs, in the style of the time of the coming disco boom, were more danceable and thus undemanding. Davis changed his record label again in 1981 when he signed a contract with Highrise Records. His first single Are You Serious would be his last R&B Top 5 hit.
In the 1990s Tyrone Davis came under contract with some smaller soul labels, but could not land any more success. He released a record about every one or two years and was a welcome guest at various soul events, where he mainly performed his old hits. He was also in the band 'Ocean's 7'
In October 2004, Tyrone Davis suffered a stroke, from the consequences of which he died on February 9, 2005 in Hinsdale Hospital.
