The Martha submarine bunker is an unfinished German submarine bunker that was built in the port of Marseille , France . The bunker is no longer directly on the water, as the excavation pit was filled in after the war. The facility is used civilly today.

Building data

The bunker has a length of 251 m and a width of 45 m. The thickness of the concrete ceiling is 5.50 m. The bunker should have 13 boxes for 20 submarines. The height of a box is 12.50 m.

history

After the whole of France had been occupied by the Anton company in November 1942 , it was decided to build submarine bunkers on the Mediterranean coast of France. In December 1942 possible locations were examined and in January 1943 Marseille was determined as the location. Wayss & Freytag was commissioned with the construction . Due to the poor condition of the soil, which required a floor slab as a foundation, a construction period of at least two years was expected.

On December 2, 1943, the construction site was bombed by 46 B-17s , which led to further delays in construction, as the sheet piling of the construction pit was damaged, among other things. On May 27, 1944, American bombers attacked the German military facilities in Marseille.

In August 1944 the Allies landed on the Côte d'Azur during Operation Dragoon . The construction work on the bunker was then stopped. On August 28, the Wehrmacht units surrendered in Marseille.

Interxion

In 2018, the company Interxion , a provider of data center services, acquired the bunker to build their third data center in Marseille. The cost of the project is given at € 140 million. The inauguration took place on July 11, 2020.
