UFD or Uncounted Faces of Death were a German hardcore band from Hanau that was active from 1987 to 1995. The band had their most creative and productive time from 1988 to 1992 with Arno Hartmann (guitar), Roi Wellershoff (bass), Jeff Howard (drums) and Norman Schlimmer (vocals). In this line-up, the band developed their "absolutely unconventional and extremely unique style" (Alexander Troll in the Wahrschauer ), which was received controversially in the scene. Various fanzines ranked UFD among the best hardcore bands of their time. The band toured regularly in Germany and other European countries, and was best known for their excessive live performances, during which the musicians mostly exhausted themselves completely.

history

Hartmann, Schlimmer and the drummer Jochen Schiffner founded the band in February 1987 under the name Uncounted Faces of Death .

From the beginning the artistic and cultural activities of the band were not limited to pure music-making. The band attached great importance to their lyrics and distributed elaborately designed text notes at concerts. The publications were accompanied by 16-32-page booklets, which contained the artistically hand-lettered song texts in German and English, drawings, graphics and comic strips. The band also mostly created the covers of their releases, band t-shirts and numerous concert posters and flyers themselves. UFD managed themselves and mainly produced and distributed their publications themselves.

UFD saw themselves as a political band and were active in the squatter scene. The band's rehearsal room was in the Autonomous Cultural Center Metzgerstrasse , an occupied house in Hanau. Some of the band members also lived there and took part in a variety of cultural and political projects. The band members were also active as concert organizers and organized over a hundred concerts with hardcore bands from all over the world in their hometown. They also designed the posters and flyers for these concerts themselves. Hartmann released Metzgergate and Terrorhythm, two compilation tapes with recordings from these concerts. In addition to the publications of the band, Schlimmer published booklets with poems and texts in his small publisher Violess War and participated in various fanzines.

Since the name Uncounted Faces of Death often led to associations with the film series Faces of Death , the band switched to using the abbreviation UFD almost exclusively very soon after the band was founded. UFD had already prevailed at its first appearance in March 1987. The band sporadically continued to use the name Uncounted Faces of Death .

After the band had completed their first concerts as a trio, Roi Wellershoff joined the bass in August 87.

Drummer Schiffner left the band in October 1988 and American Jeff Howard took his place. Just one week after Howard, the "fastest man at the shooting gallery who crawls around in Germany" (Moses Arndt in ZAP ), joined the band, the first appearance followed with a new line-up.

The band played concerts all over Germany and in March 1989 recorded thirteen songs for an Uncounted Faces of Death titled "Album on Tape".

In 1990 the EP Betonstadtkinder followed . UFD used the signet Bomb it for the first time. Records, which also includes her LP Sei tot! appeared, and among the worse continued to publish music in subsequent years. After the release in the summer, UFD completed a Germany tour with the band Trottel from Budapest. On the occasion of the tour, the two bands released a split tape. In December of that year, the first tour abroad followed. The band gave five concerts in what was then the CSFR.

In spring 1991 UFD went on tour in Germany with the band AMD , also from Budapest . In September they released the LP Be dead! that they recorded in the studio of Angel Dust singer Shelko Topalovic. The front cover of the LP was painted by the Hanau painter Markus Fleck. The publication was created in cooperation with X-Mist Records and the Hanauer Verlag / Label Komista .

Following the release, UFD toured the CSFR and Poland. Like the first CSFR tour, Martin Valášek's concerts were organized by Malárie Records . For distribution in Eastern Europe, Valášek released the LP Be dead! On his Valašská Bystřice-based label . on tape.

In the summer of 1992 UFD completed a European tour through 8 countries with the band Resist from Portland, Oregon .

After the tour, singer Schlimmer left the band. The band didn't really come to terms with his exit. Guitarist Hartmann also took over the vocals. A second guitarist, Kai Roessler, was hired for a short time. After Roessler left the band, the band produced a tape with four songs in 1994. In the two years after Schlimmer's resignation, the band played about 10 concerts and broke up in early 1995.

After the end of the band

Jeff Howard played in various bands after his time at UFD and has been the drummer for the band KranK since 2012 .

After UFD, Norman Schlimmer played bass for several years in the instrumental noise rock band Advanced Chemistry Set 4 Girlz , in which the former UFD drummer Schiffner and the guitarist Sebastian Obländer also played. Worse continues to publish music on the internet occasionally. He runs a literary blog called Violess War, on which he publishes his texts. Occasionally he produces street art.

In 2000 Roi Wellershoff produced a multi-media CD-ROM which contains the entire discography, all of the band's artwork, as well as numerous photos and concert posters and flyers.

In 2009 the music portal Church of Zer dedicated a page to the band on which, authorized by the band, several publications are offered for download.

In 2012, Torsten Kauke , the operator of the event venue Waggon am Kulturgleis in Offenbach, published eleven previously unpublished UFD pieces on his music blog Unpop Media under the title There are more important things than living in peace . The band made the recordings in December 1988 with the line-up of Schlimmer / Hartmann / Wellershoff / Howard, but were dissatisfied with the results.
