The federal city of Bonn has been the seat of United Nations organizations since 1951 .

The Lange Eugen on the UN campus is the seat of most of the UN organizations in Bonn.

As the 21st office of the United Nations in Bonn, the UNOPS-ICAT Secretariat is located on the UN campus in Bonn. Bonn's role as a sustainability center was also expanded with the establishment of the GWOPA secretariat in January 2020 and the UN location was further strengthened.

After Bonn had become the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, the first United Nations organizations opened the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and in 1953 the International Labor Organization (ILO) liaison offices in Bonn. The first UN organization with a global task, based in Bonn in 1984, the Secretariat of the result of his signing resort Bonn Convention called the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMD; 1979), which the United Nations Environment Program is supported (UNEP).

From 2001 to 2007, the diplomat Harald Ganns was the Federal Foreign Office's special envoy for looking after the UN organizations based in Bonn. From November 2012, the Federal Foreign Office was in charge of drafting the bill for a host state law based on the Swiss model , which it is hoped will facilitate the settlement of international organizations and non-governmental organizations. This was completed at the beginning of 2014 and should then be submitted to the coordination between the federal ministries also responsible for the proposals. The Host State Act was enacted on November 30, 2019 ( Federal Law Gazette I, p. 1929 ).
