Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize
The Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize is a prize awarded annually by UNESCO . The prize was created in 1997 and is intended to honor a person, organization or institution who has campaigned for freedom of the press in a special way, especially at risk .
The prize is endowed with 25,000 US dollars and is awarded on May 3, the day of freedom of the press . It is named after Guillermo Cano Isaza , editor of the El Espectador newspaper in Colombia , who was murdered in Bogotá on December 17, 1986. Cano was a vocal voice of criticism of the country's powerful drug lords .
The winner is determined by 14 members of an independent jury selected by the UNESCO Director General. UNESCO member states and non-governmental organizations working in the field of press freedom are eligible to make proposals .
