The UNIVAC 1108 was the second product line in the UNIVAC 1100/2200 series , which was introduced in 1964 . In contrast to the UNIVAC 1107 , in the UNIVAC 1108 the magnetic memory for the processor registers based on the thin film memory has been replaced by integrated circuits. In addition, smaller and faster core memories were used for the main memory.

In addition, two other architecture changes were introduced:

  • Two 18-bit base registers were introduced, one for instructions and one for data storage. As a specialty, the registers allow dynamic reallocation of memory addresses. If a program was read in and out of a memory area, the instructions and data could be repositioned in this memory area.
  • Additional hardware commands for double arithmetic as well as load, save and compare operations for double words .

When the first UNIVAC 1108 was delivered in 1965, the UNIVAC 1108 II , also known as the UNIVAC 1108A , was sold at the same time . In contrast to the UNIVAC 1108, the UNIVAC 1108A was a multi-processor system .

Although an internal study in 1964 predicted that only about 43 units could be sold, a total of 296 machines were produced.

When the Sperry Corporation supplied the main memory as semiconductor memory, the same machine was sold under the name UNIVAC 1100/20 .

Technical specifications

This enabled the UNIVAC 1108 to execute three programs in the processors and two I / O programs in the input / output controllers at the same time.
