With UN resolution 2177 , UNMEER was launched on September 18, 2014 , the first UN mission due to an illness ( Ebola ). The aim of the mission was to contain the Ebola epidemic , which had gotten out of control, especially in West Africa .

The main task is, above all, the logistical distribution of hospital wards, vehicles and telecommunications equipment in the most affected countries. To achieve this goal, the UN is working with the AU , ECOWAS and the governments of the countries concerned. The headquarters of the UN mission is in Ghana's capital Accra . The US-American Anthony Banbury handed over the management of the mission to Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on January 3rd .
