The USS Germantown (LSD-42) is a dock landing ship of the United States Navy and belongs to the Whidbey Island class . It was named after the Battle of Germantown in the American War of Independence .
history
LSD-42 was commissioned in 1982 as the second unit in its class. In the same year the keel of the ship was laid at the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company in Seattle , and the ship was launched in 1984. In 1986 Germantown was taken over into the US Navy.
During the Second Gulf War , Germantown was in the Persian Gulf. On December 1, 1990, she left her home port of San Diego . During the nine months of the mission, Germantown was involved in the simulated amphibious landings in the United Arab Emirates. The Germantown was then stationed as a forward unit in Japan, where it remained until 2002, when it was replaced by the USS Harpers Ferry (LSD-49) . Germantown returned to Diego, where it was overhauled for $ 25 million.
In 2003/2004, Germantown moved from there again to the Persian Gulf to take part in Operation Iraqi Freedom . The Germantown combat group surrounding the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) brought the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the war zone. In 2006 the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit was relocated to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Enduring Freedom . The Germantown also sailed the Gulf from the end of 2007 , this time as part of the combat group around USS Tarawa (LHA-1) . In March 2011, the ship was sent off the coast of Japan to be ready for emergency aid after the Tōhoku earthquake . In early 2012, Germantown took part in the Cobra Gold exercise off the coast of Thailand.
