Stelco was founded in 1910 through the merger of the Hamilton Steel and Iron Company (HSIC) and the Montreal Rolling Mills (MRM). By 1932, Stelco had a 45% market share in Canada.

The Lake Erie steel mill was built from 1974 to 1980. The number of employees rose to up to 25,000 in the 1970s.

In the 1980s, the company ran into economic problems due to low steel prices and stricter environmental regulations.

In 2007, Stelco was for 1.1 billion US dollars over plus debt of US Steel.
