Uaul Taviarna

The Uaul Taviarna ( Uaul in the Rhaeto-Romanic idiom Sursilvan for "forest") is a forest area above Laax in the Surselva in the canton of Graubünden .

The area is located north of Laax-Muschetg on an elongated, about one kilometer long ridge that slopes steeply to the east towards the ravine of the Ual Draus. On the west side a road leads up to Nagens, which is often used by mountain bikers.

The mixed forest , dominated by larches , red firs and pines, is of particular importance in the canton due to its extraordinary population density of capercaillie . This is threatened by the proximity of the forest to the Plaun area, which is heavily used by tourists .

In June 2010, as part of the UN Year of Biodiversity , the cantonal forest office (AfW) presented measures to preserve the natural habitat of the bird, which still numbers around 400 specimens in all of Graubünden.
