Ubiquiti Networks is an American manufacturer of active network components . The company was founded in 2005 and initially manufactured WLAN adapters for PCs. In 2007, the range was expanded to include network components such as WLAN routers, access points , WLAN antennas and directional antennas, especially for outdoor use. VoIP telephones have also been manufactured since 2014 . Switches and network cameras for professional and semi-professional use are now also manufactured by Ubiquiti Networks.
In October 2011, Ubiquiti Networks went public on NASDAQ .
Ubiquiti's WLAN routers use a Linux-based operating system ("airOS") and WLAN chips from Atheros . The nanoStation routers are very popular in the free wireless sector because they allow you to use your own firmware .
In 2012 a security hole was found in the included boot loader , which made it relatively easy to read out the configuration including the passwords with physical access to the network cable. The loophole was closed in the devices sold as a result, but the changes to the source code of U-Boot were initially not published, although this is under the GPL license and therefore would have to be published in parallel. Only later did Ubiquiti Networks catch up on this.
