The Ubuntu Software Center (short only Software Center ) is a pre-installed app store for Linux - operating system Ubuntu and some its derivatives . In some derivatives, however, a separate variant is also supplied (e.g. the Lubuntu Software Center on Lubuntu and the Muon program management on Kubuntu ). The Ubuntu Store takes over the function on Ubuntu Touch .
It is released as Free Software under the GNU Lesser General Public License . On April 16, 2016 the development was stopped and the App Store continued as GNOME software (under Ubuntu also Ubunu software ).
Functions
The program is used to download, install and manage software repositories and packages and thus saves installation via the command line or the Synaptic package manager . In addition to free software, commercial software can also be purchased with an Ubuntu One or games can be installed. Debian packages and RPM packages , among others, are supported . However, some applications, especially for the command line, as well as functions of the other package managers are missing. Instead, an attempt is made to map the user-friendliness of other app stores in order to simplify the installation process for laypeople.
development
The software was developed in Python with PyGTK / PyGObject from the GTK program library .
The first version of the Software Center was published on October 29, 2009 in the Ubuntu build Ubuntu 9.10 and will be delivered preinstalled on many Ubuntu desktop operating systems from now on. The last update for the Software Center was released on April 16, 2016 with build 16.04. Commercial applications have been removed. The old software center still works. With Ubuntu 16.04 LTS , the Ubuntu Software Center was replaced by GNOME Software as part of Gnome . On Ubuntu it is now called Ubuntu Software and integrates the function of Snappy with access to Canonical's Snap Store .
