The Ucayali water rat ( Amphinectomys savamis ) is a rodent from the group of New World mice .
It is only known from a single specimen that was found in 1991 on the Ucayali River in the Loreto region in northern Peru . The site was in the rainforest on the river bank.
The animal was 19 centimeters long, its tail was 21 centimeters long and the weight was 214 grams. Its fur was brownish on the top and gray on the belly. It was similar to the Neotropical water rats ( Nectomys ), but differed in that they had significantly larger webbed feet on their hind feet.
Nothing is known about the way of life. The Ucayali water rat is believed to be an excellent swimmer. Like the Neotropical water rats, it could feed on insects, small fish, and plants. Nothing is known about the degree of risk.
