Uche Okechukwu (born September 27, 1967 in Lagos ) is a Nigerian football player and wore the jersey of his home country several times. He took part in the 1994 World Cup in the United States and the 1998 World Cup in France , where he led his team as captain. In 1994 Okechukwu won the African Championship with the national team and the 1996 Olympic Games .

Club career

In 1987 Okechuwu began his career with the Flash Flamingoes. From 1988 to 1990 he played for Iwuanyanwu Nationale. His talent did not go undiscovered for long: he was hired by Brøndby IF in 1990 . During his time in Denmark he was able to convince completely, so that the Turkish top club Fenerbahçe Istanbul noticed him and signed him.

At Fenerbahce, Okechuwu became a crowd favorite. He and the Danish international Jes Høgh formed the central defense at Fenerbahce. Okechuwu played a total of eight and a half years at Fenerbahce and played 224 league games for the club, in which he was able to score 19 goals.

For the 2002/2003 season Okechuwu moved to İstanbulspor , as he was only a substitute player at Fenerbahce. He was active for four seasons at Istanbulspor. He rose with the club in the second division and just missed promotion in the 2005/2006 season in the play-offs against Sakaryaspor.

Life in Turkey

Okechuwu and his former Nigerian teammate at Fenerbahce, Jay Jay Okocha , applied for Turkish citizenship in 1997, Okechuwu's Turkish name is Deniz Uygar .
