Uechi Kanbun
Uechi Kanbun ( Jap. 上地完文 * 5. May 1877 , † 25. November 1948 ) is the founder of karate style Uechi Ryu Karate Do .
He studied the Chinese fighting system Pangai-Noon (Pwang-gay-noon) in China for 10 years and got the permission of his teacher to open his own school. There he taught many students until one day one of his students killed a man in self-defense . The residents blamed Uechi for the accident because one of his students had committed the manslaughter. The hatred of the Uechi residents drove them back home to Okinawa after three years of successful teaching in China. There he was soon discovered as a true master of martial arts and despite his vow never to teach karate again , his friend Ryuyu Tomoyose managed to break his vow. His son Uechi Kan'ei also began teaching in 1930 under the guidance of his father. Uechi taught in Wakayama Prefecture until 1947 .
When Uechi Kanbun died in 1948, his students renamed the karate style to Uechi Ryu Karate Do.
