Uehara Konen ( Japanese 上原 古 年 , real name: Uehara Sennosuke (上原 千 之 助); born December 16, 1877 in Tokyo ; died May 24, 1940 ) was a Japanese painter and woodblock artist of the Nihonga movement during the -Meiji- , Taishō and early Shōwa periods .

life and work

Uehara Konen was born in Tokyo. He began to study painting under Kajita Hanko (梶 田 半 古, 1870–1917), then switched to Matsumoto Fūko (松本 楓 湖, 1840–1923). He mainly deals with landscape painting, exhibited at official exhibitions and has received several awards.

He was influenced by the linework of Imamura Shiko . According to information from his publisher Watanabe , he worked as an official employee of the imperial household and for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was also in a relationship with Okakura Kakuzō for a time .

Only a few prints of woodcuts have survived, some that had been printed by the publisher Kobayashi Bunshichi (小 林文 七; 1861-1923) before the Kantō earthquake in 1923 , and a series that was printed by Watanabe afterwards. It was still almost exclusively about landscapes.
