history

The exact year of construction of the Old Ugston Farm has not been recorded. However, the late 16th century is estimated as the construction period. Details allow information on the building history to be derived. A change in the stone material used on the upper floor suggests that an additional floor was made at a later date. It can also be concluded that the Ugston Farm formerly ended with a thatched roof. The now vacant buildings were placed on the Scottish List of Endangered Listed Buildings in 1997. Most recently, in 2011, their condition was classified as very poor and at the same time high risk.

description

Ugston Old Farm is isolated around 700 m northwest of Haddington . It is separated from the city by the A1 . On the ground floor, the relatively massive masonry consists of small fragments of stone, as can be found in the area. On the upper floor, however, larger, very roughly hewn stones were used, which were probably broken in a quarry. The facades with windows of various sizes and external doors on both floors are asymmetrical. In addition to slotted windows, there are essentially four-part lattice windows installed without decoration. Two doors on the east side close off with flat round arches . The doors are made up of unadorned boards. The final gable roof is covered with red tiles and designed with a stepped gable .
