Memorial at the meeting point of Livingstone and Stanley
|
Ujiji (pronunciation [ ˈudʒidʒi ]) is the oldest city in western Tanzania , 10 km south of Kigoma on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika . Traditional residents were the Vajiji . Islamic merchants settled here, as the city was an important base for goods and slave trade from the Congo. In the German colonial times the place was called Station Udschidschi and was occupied by the 6th Company of the Schutztruppe for German East Africa .
In Ujiji, Burton and Speke were the first Europeans to reach Lake Tanganyika in February 1858 . Stanley found Livingstone here in November 1871 , which Dr. Livingstone Memorial commemorates.
In 1878 the London Missionary Society founded the first mission station on Lake Tanganyika here.
