Uljaste is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Sonda ( Sonda vald ). It is located in Ida-Viru County ( East Wierland ) in northeast Estonia .

Description and history

The village has 15 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2009). It is northwest of the village of Sonda .

Uljaste was first mentioned in a document in 1468. A village school existed in Uljaste from 1885 to 1921.

Lake Uljaste ( Uljaste järv ) is popular with nature lovers . It has an area of ​​63 hectares. The greatest depth is 5.6 meters. The Uljaste Moor ( Uljaste soo ) borders the lake to the west . Nearby are the two lakes Mädajärv (2.6 hectares) and Saarjärv (0.5 hectares).

In the 1920s, the Russian poet Igor Severyanin (1887–1941) , who emigrated to Estonia , was a frequent holiday guest in Ulyaste.
