Ulla Procopé
Ulrika (Ulla) Eleonora Matilda Procopé-Nyman (born November 17, 1921 in Helsinki , Finland , † December 21, 1968 in Tenerife , Spain ) was a Finnish ceramist and designer .
Procopé was a graduate of the Helsinki University of Art and Design .
Since 1948 she worked in the design department of Arabia . At first she was entrusted with the development of new forms. When she had to give up work on the potter's wheel for health reasons in 1951, Kaj Franck brought her to his team. She was awarded an honorary diploma at the 1957 Milan Triennial.
Ulla Procopé remained inconspicuous at a time when Finnish designers were attracting a lot of international attention. However, it is thanks to them that they have made solutions in the pottery trade fruitful for industrially manufactured mass-produced goods.
Well-known designs
- Jam pot AL with basket handle, earthenware , 1953
- GA teapot with basket handle, porcelain , 1955
- Cookware Liekki (German flame), stoneware, 1957
- Service Valencia , Fayence , 1960. Inspired by the colorful studio ceramics of Spain, a fruit set with a dark cobalt blue decor was created in 1960. It was soon expanded to a complete table, coffee and tea service. In 1979 the original material faience was replaced by vitro porcelain. This made it possible - due to the lower firing temperature compared to hard-paste porcelain - to add strong colors to the glaze. Valencia is now considered a classic in the typical style of Arabia.
- Service Ruska , gray earthenware, 1960. The tableware presented at the Milan Triennale is characterized by its extreme resistance. It belongs to the tableware that should give housewives less washing up. The individually burned out, brown speckled glaze made each piece unique and gave the impression of being made by hand. With Ruska , the combination of rustic, practical and clear forms became a typical feature of Finnish ceramics of the sixties and seventies.
