Ulli Meybohm's HTML editor phase 5 is a free program for private use or schools (non-commercial use) for creating HTML documents under Windows . It was originally developed by Ulli Meybohm since 1996 and has been further developed by Hans-Dieter Berretz since 1998. The development of the program is expressed in phases (currently "phase 5"). Meybohm was not interested in further developing the program because he no longer wanted to deal so intensively with Windows programs and put his energy into Linux projects.

properties

Appearance and operation were initially based on the commercial HomeSite program from Allaire Corporation, which is now part of Dreamweaver . In addition to HTML, syntax highlighting also supports PHP , ASP , JavaScript , Perl , SQL , Java , C ++ , Modula-2 , Object-Pascal , Python , Visual Basic and a few more.

The editor also supports the user when editing HTML source text through automatic code completion , a built-in preview and additional tools such as a debugger / link tester, the ability to search and replace files across files and a tool for creating tables. The most important commands can be inserted using keyboard shortcuts, the rest of the HTML 4 command set can be accessed using menus or buttons.

Current XHTML can be created with it, but the supporting functions are directed towards HTML 4. UTF-8 and Unicode are not supported, but support for them can be upgraded with a plug- in.

The program is portable, which means that after installation it can be copied to a USB stick and used on any Windows PC without any loss of functionality.

Since the program was originally freeware , it was widely used in schools and other educational institutions. Today it is only offered free of charge to schools and private users. Clubs and commercial users must purchase a license .

proton

Ulli Meybohm also has the slim text editor Proton , on which the HTML editor was originally based. The freeware editor has syntax highlighting, complex search and replace functions (partially supports regular expressions ), unlimited undo / redo (revoking commands), shell shortcuts, an integrated command line for compiling or calling other programs, " drag & drop " -Support, as well as automatic recognition and further use of different line break formats . The user interface is simple, without great convenience, but can be expanded with its own plug-ins .

The software is available in a portable version that can be started and used without first being installed on a Windows system (executable under Windows 9x , Windows Me , Windows NT , Windows 2000 , Windows 2003 and Windows XP ).
