Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver is an HTML editor from Adobe Inc. (originally developed by Macromedia ), consisting of a combination of a WYSIWYG editor with parallel source code editing. Due to its complexity, its wide range of functions and its price, the program is more likely to be used by professional users. Dreamweaver currently runs on the macOS and Windows operating systems . According to the manufacturer, Dreamweaver has over 3.2 million users worldwide.

Characteristic and development

Dreamweaver enables the graphic editing of web pages and offers features such as color coding and auto-complete for HTML code and scripting languages such as PHP and JavaScript .

The first Dreamweaver version appeared in 1997. In Dreamweaver versions 7 to CS3, the Opera engine Presto was used for layout rendering , and from version CS4 the WebKit engine. Version 2.3 of the Adobe Creative Suite includes GoLive and Dreamweaver. In Creative Suite 3.0, GoLive was completely replaced by Dreamweaver.

Since the update to version 11.0.4, partial syntax support for HTML5 and CSS3 has been implemented; it has been fully supported since CS5.5. The Open Source project PhoneGap in Dreamweaver was also introduced in CS5.5 . This should enable application programming for iOS and Android . With the help of the integrated development environment LiveCode , app development is supported.

Mobile apps

Up until the end of 2012, Adobe offered a number of apps for smartphones and tablets that were designed to help users work with Dreamweaver. This included, for example, Adobe Proto for Apple iOS between 2011 and the discontinuation , with the help of which the basic layout of a website could be planned on the mobile device. The program supports numerous gestures that can be used to plan header, navigation and footer bars and to place interactive elements such as images and videos . As soon as the design of a website on the tablet was completed, the automatically generated source text could be exported as a ZIP archive for further processing and transferred to a regular computer .
