The first people settled in the suburbs around 1300. Despite the existing settlement space within the secure city wall, the patricians of the city wanted a new place for their buildings. The construction work was completed around 1475 with the construction of the nocturnal inlet gate . The main entrance to the suburb was and is the Ulmer Tor . In 1805 the French made efforts to demolish the largest municipal defense tower, Luginsland, and the white flour sack . In 1863, the emergency center was demolished at the request of the suburbanites .

The large buildings in the Ulm suburbs are the Parishaus of the Lords of Paris and the Grimmelhaus of the Lords of Grimmel . Smaller craft houses are characteristic of the suburb.
