history

Inside of the gate
View of the guard room

As early as the ramparts around the Ulm suburb, pedestrians arriving after the gate had closed could be let in through a little gate called Diemerstürlins . In 1475 a stately entrance gate was built at this point. In front of the entrance was the relatively wide, always flooded city moat. Only when the guards saw no danger did they lower the drawbridge for a fee to allow late arrivals to enter the kennel behind. While people and vehicles were being searched, city soldiers waited on the battlements to fend off a possible attack. The main gate was opened for a further fee, and for a third fee (also called customs), the newcomers were examined. It was only when they were given permission to enter the city that they got to the Ulm suburbs. There they had to wait until the emergency center gate was opened the next morning , from which they could get into the city center.

The guard room and the gate were still inhabited by an elderly lady until a few years ago, despite the lack of electricity and sanitary facilities.
