Emergency center

The emergency center photographed from the south around 1860. It was canceled just three years later.

The Notzentor was a city gate of the Upper Swabian city of Memmingen . It was also called "Inner Niedergassentor".

location

The gate stood on the north side of the old Guelph city near the market square and was the connecting gate to the Ulm suburb . From there the old battlements led to the prison towers Hexenturm and Kerkerturm .

Appearance

The emergency gate was a typical Swabian raised gate with a Romanesque round arch. On the north side of the tower there were two huge halberds in medieval costumes and between them two lions, each of which held a Memmingen city coat of arms. In their center there was a larger coat of arms, probably the imperial one with an imperial eagle and crown. Above it was the year MCXCIIII (1194). What has been preserved is a small arch on the city wall behind the MeWo house.

history

The emergency center from the north around 1860

Around the year 1000, a wooden gate is said to have stood in the place of the emergency gate. Around 1150 the city was provided with a stone city wall. A gate to the north was first mentioned around 1270. Around 1400, instead of the Romanesque lower gate, the emergency center was built as the northern entrance to the city. When the Ulm suburb was integrated into the wall belt, the emergency center with the moat was retained as a defensive structure for the old city . It was only canceled in 1863 at the request of the citizens of the Ulm suburbs, who feared being sidelined because of the very narrow access. The gate passage was extremely narrow, always damp and dirty, because no sun rays penetrated due to the narrow buildings. The demolition was completed on February 15, 1863. The gate was named after the Notz family, who for many generations exercised the gatekeeping office of the gate, which is also known as the “Inner Niedergassentor” gate. A memorial plaque in the MeWo house reminds of the emergency gate.
