Begging tower
The begging tower is a former bastion tower in the Upper Swabian city of Memmingen . Today it is used by a fishermen's group .
location
The tower stands on the east side of the so-called Ulmer Vorstadt between the entrance and the Luginsland, which no longer exists.
Appearance
The begging tower is a round tower made of bricks . At the back it is flattened in the entrance area and provided with a simple framework . The roof is also round, pulled up and finished with a small weather vane . It is covered with roof tiles .
history
The begging tower was built as a gun turret during the last city expansion in 1471. Its main purpose was to secure the entrance and the moat. It is not known where the name is derived from. It also served as a poor house in the 19th century. Today it is used by a group of the fishing day club.
