The Powder Tower was a defense tower of the Upper Swabian city of Memmingen and is the only remaining tower of the former eastern fortification. In the Middle Ages it was used to store gunpowder . Today it is part of a closed café.

location

The tower stands on the east side of the old town, between the no longer existing structures Kalchtor and water tower . Opposite is the ZOB and the Memmingen train station.

Appearance

The tower was rectangular with a gable roof and probably resembled the witch's tower . Today it is a rectangular, almost square tower with a sheet metal flat roof.

history

The powder tower has a checkered history. It was built around 1350 during the second city expansion. Until the end of the imperial city period, it served as a storage facility for gunpowder. There was a powder mill in its vicinity, which is why it was also called the powder mill tower . When the railway was built in 1863, it was the only tower that was spared from demolition. Nevertheless, a lot has been rebuilt on it, so that not much of its original appearance is left. In the thirties of the 20th century it was integrated into a café, which was later expanded into an evening club and then a dance hall. Today the company is closed. Occasional evening events take place there.
