The dungeon tower was a prison tower in the Upper Swabian city ​​of Memmingen .

location

The tower was in the northwest corner of the old Guelph city. It formed the connection between the city center and the so-called Ulm suburb. He stood between the West Gate and the Swallowtail Tower .

Appearance

The base of the rectangular tower was made of tuff stone and the superstructure was made of bricks and had a gable roof . Today it is a pure brick tower with a flat roof, the entrance of which is at the height of the old battlement, about five meters above the ground.

history

The dungeon tower, one of three prison towers, came from the time Memmingen became a town (around 1150), the superstructure from the second city expansion in the 14th century. The battlements led through it to the no longer existing emergency gate , from there to the Hexenturm , another prison tower. In the 19th century it was canceled due to the expansion of the Memminger brewery . In 1984 it was completely rebuilt in a modern form together with a piece of the city wall and the city hall .
