The monument in Herrenstrasse

history

The upper gate was probably built around the year 1000 AD. It stood at the end of Herrenstrasse on today's Roßmarkt. The name came from the upper entrance to the old Guelph city . After the city was expanded to the south in the 14th century with the so-called Wegbachviertel , the Obertor lost its purpose and was demolished. The Kempter Tor took over its duties . Nothing has been preserved about the appearance of the upper gate. However, it can be assumed that it was similar to the emergency center gate built at the same time . A plaque on a house at the former location commemorates the gate.
