The Zwingerturm is a former prison tower in the Upper Swabian city ​​of Memmingen .

The tower stands on the west side of the old town between the prison tower and the Westertor .

Appearance

The round tower is made of tuff stone in the substructure and brick in the superstructure , and has a round, raised roof. Today there is still a tower stump on which a house with a gable roof was built.

history

The Zwingerturm is one of the two oldest still preserved city towers. The lower area dates from the time the city was founded (around 1150), the superstructure from the period after 1860. It is one of three prison towers earlier. The battlements led through it in direct connection to the dungeon tower . It was removed in the upper part around 1860. After that, a small house with a gable roof was built on the stump and the part behind it. Today the house and the tower stump are privately inhabited.
