Ulmtalradweg near Wallendorf

The Ulmtalradweg is a cycle path in the western Lahn-Dill district in Hesse, which mainly uses the route of the former Ulmtalbahn . The approximately 20 km long cycle path connects the Hessian long-distance cycle path R7 near Biskirchen with the Hessian long-distance cycle route R8 near Driedorf . The path is also aimed at hikers.

In the course of the Ulmtal cycle path from the Outdoor Center Lahntal up to the R8 in the area around the junction (605 m above sea level), several rest areas and viewpoints invite you to take a break. One of them has a treading pool.

At the rest areas you can find information about the former Ulmtalbahn and the local raw materials that were transported by train: basalt, clay and iron ore.

Current expansion

In the area of the municipality of Greifenstein , the cycle path runs between Greifenstein-Allendorf "Outdoor Zentrum Lahntal" and above Greifenstein-Arborn. In the first construction phase in 2010 (Outdoor Center Lahntal to Allendorf) around 4.0 km were completed. Between Allendorf and Greifenstein-Ulm , it was extended by 1.5 km in 2012 and was officially opened to the public on September 2, 2012. In mid-2013 the next section to Holzhausen was completed; from June 2014 the cycle path will reach the country road to Rodenroth. In 2016, the expansion to Greifenstein-Beilstein was completed, in 2017 it was completed.

Between Biskirchen and Beilstein , the cycle path uses the route of the former Ulmtalbahn and therefore has a relatively moderate gradient. The route continues in the direction of Driedorf on dirt roads. The renovation of several bridges in the Greifenstein area has been completed - with the exception of two. In the summer of 2017, the railway cycle path to Beilstein will be fully developed and the connection to the R8 will be passable on good to very good asphalt. Only in the area of the city of Leun has not yet been any work on the cycle path.

On the route of the old railway line, the cycle path is marked by the traffic sign 240 - common foot and cycle path . This prohibits the use of the path with mopeds , horses and agricultural vehicles.
