Ulrich Schreiber (cultural manager)

Ulrich Schreiber (* 1951 in Solingen ) is a German architect and cultural manager . He is the founder and director of the Berlin International Literature Festival, co-founder and co-director of the Odessa International Literature Festival.

Life

Schreiber learned the bricklaying trade, attained secondary school leaving certificate in evening courses and, after studying civil engineering, university entrance qualification. From 1973 to 1981 he studied philosophy, politics and Russian at the Free University of Berlin and passed the second state examination in Celle in 1984 .

From 1979 to 1981 he was editor of the magazine Moderne Zeiten . In 1980 he was co-founder of the Berliner and 1983 founder of the Volksuniversität in Hamburg. In 1985 he directed the German-Italian cultural festival in Hamburg. In the 1980s and 1990s he worked as a cultural manager and architect in Hamburg, Stuttgart and Berlin. In 1989 he founded the International Peter Weiss Society , which he headed until 1998. In 1998 he organized the Thomas Bernhard Days in Berlin.

In 2001 he founded the international literature festival berlin, which is run by the Peter Weiss Foundation for Art and Politics. V is organized.

Schreiber is one of the co-initiators of the PEN World Voices Festival, The New York Festival of International Literature and a literature festival in Mumbai 2007. He has also been organizing the worldwide readings since 2006 . Schreiber is a member of the PEN Center Germany .

In 2015 he founded the Odessa International Literature Festival with Hans Ruprecht.

Awards

  • In 2015 Schreiber was named “Chevalier” des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his “contribution to the radiance of the arts and literature in France and in the world” .
