Ulrich Zimmermann (biotechnologist)

Ulrich Zimmermann (born March 9, 1942 in Berlin ) is a German biotechnologist.

From 1961 to 1966 he studied chemistry and physics at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover and at the Technical University of Berlin . Finally, he did his doctorate in 1968 at the TU Berlin. He wrote his dissertation on the investigation of element and isotope discrimination of alkali ions on the membranes of unicellular algae .

From 1969 to 1984 Zimmermann headed the membrane research group at Forschungszentrum Jülich . In 1984 he accepted a professorship for biotechnology at the University of Würzburg . Since his retirement in 2009, he has been a senior professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Würzburg.

His main research interests are the electrical manipulation of cells and organelles ; the immune-isolated transplantation of cells and turgor- regulated processes in algae and higher plants.

His company is one of the finalists for the German Innovation Prize 2011.
