development

The aim of the association is to organize an international festival for contemporary music at a high artistic level in Oslo every year. The basis of the festival is the coordination of resources by the members.

Ultima was founded in 1990 when the Association for New Music organized the World Music Days in Oslo. However, the first festival did not take place until the fall of 1991. The initiators were Knut Høyland (NRK), Geir Johnson (New Music), John Persen (Norwegian Composers' Association), Jostein Simble (Music Information Center) and Helge Skansen (New Music). Ultima was originally founded as an amalgamation of 16 - later 17 - music institutions, but in the end the festival received public support from the Norwegian Cultural Council and the City of Oslo, among others.

The main source of funding for the first ten years was the oil company FINA Exploration , which had a sponsorship deal with the festival until 1999. From 2006 to 2017 the festival was funded by the Ministry of Culture (60%) and the City of Oslo (40%).
