The ultramarine bishop ( Cyanocompsa brissonii ), also known as the dark blue bishop , is a South American songbird from the cardinal family .

description

The ultramarine bishop reaches a length of 13 to 16 cm. The male has a dark blue plumage with a black forehead stripe. In addition to black reins , the male also has a black border around the lower beak. The top of the head, the cheeks and the small wing coverts, however, are light cobalt blue. The large wing covers as well as the tail and wing feathers are black in color with dark blue edges, while the dark blue color of the belly becomes almost black towards the middle of the belly and the under tail coverts. The male ultramarine bishop has dark brown eyes, black brown feet and an almost black upper beak. The lower beak, however, is more blue-gray towards the base.

The female of the ultramarine bishop has a brown plumage on the upper side, the head and the underside have a dark ocher to red-brown color. The elytra, wings and tail are black-brown and have ocher-brown edges. The female's beak is gray-brown. The young birds of the Ultramarine Bishop are similar to the females, but the brown plumage is lighter in color.

distribution and habitat

The ultramarine bishop occurs in large parts of South America. He lives in western Colombia and northern Venezuela . There are other deposits in eastern Brazil from Fortaleza to eastern Bolivia , in Paraguay and in northern Argentina . The ultramarine bishop, who lives in pairs or in small troops, prefers bush-strewn grasslands, sparse forests or forest edges as habitat. It also inhabits river banks and pastureland.
