The Ulutau ( Kazakh Ұлытау "big mountains"; Russian Улутау ) is a low mountain range in Kazakhstan .
It is located west of the city of Sheqasghan in the center of the country and runs in a north-south direction. In older literature it is referred to as the Guberlin Mountains .
To the south the mountains merge into the Hungersteppe , to the west into the Turgaisenke . Occasionally the Ulutau is counted to the Kazakh threshold , which is located to the east, but with which the Ulutau has no visible connection above ground.
The highest mountain is the Ulutau of the same name with 1133 m . The mountain range consists mainly of granite .
The Ulutau area is rich in various mineral resources that are smelted in Sheqasghan. Deposits of copper and gold in particular are worth mining .
