Umang Gupta

Umang Gupta (* 1949 in Patiala , Punjab ) is an Indian-American entrepreneur.

In 1971 he received his BA in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and the following year his MBA from Kent State University in Ohio. In 1973 he began his career at IBM , initially as a salesperson, where he rose to marketing management. During this time he met a British woman, Ruth. He did not go back to India because of her.

Around 1980 he moved to a start-up in Silicon Valley . When he started his own software company in 1981, he couldn't find a venture capitalist. After a few months he started working for another start-up, Relational Software, as the 17th employee. He wrote the first business plan. This later became the Oracle Corporation.

In 1984 he founded Gupta Technologies , which went public in 1993. Here he was Chairman and CEO until he left the company in 1996. He then became an investor and advisor for several start-ups. At the call center system manufacturer Mosaix , he served on the Board of Trustees from 1997–99 until it was sold to Lucent .

Today he runs Keynote Systems in San Mateo , California.
