Umberto Scarpelli

Umberto Scarpelli (born May 25, 1904 in Orvieto , † May 15, 1980 in Rome ) was an Italian film director .

Life

Scarpelli was assistant director and production manager for numerous films in the 1930s and at the beginning of the 1940s (for Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica , among others ), until he himself took the chair for a number of works. Notable among his few films are Vom Landpfarrer zum Pope ( Gli uomini non guardano il cielo ), a biography of Pope Pius X , for which he also wrote the screenplay with Ettore Margadonna , and the atmospheric, early fantasy film The Downfall of Metropolis .
