The Independence ( Croatian Dan neovisnosti ) is in Croatia on October 8 of each year as a national holiday celebrated.

It is celebrated in memory of the day and the year 1991 when the Croatian Parliament ( Sabor ) unanimously passed the decision to break off all constitutional links between the Republic of Croatia and the Yugoslav state.

The Parliament stated that the independent Republic of Croatia no longer recognizes any of the state organs of Yugoslavia as legitimate and legal, and also no legal acts of any body which purports to act on behalf of the former, defunct Yugoslav Federation.

The Croatian parliament came to this decision after a three-month moratorium on sovereignty and independence had expired the day before . The moratorium was passed by parliament on June 25, 1991 ( national holiday ). It was based on the Brioni declaration of July 7th and the request of the European Community (EC) , which wanted to resolve the drifting apart of the Yugoslav states and the associated crisis in a peaceful way. On the same day, the historic center of the Croatian capital Zagreb and the official seat of the Croatian government were bombed by aircraft belonging to the Yugoslav People's Army .

For security reasons, the historic session of all three chambers of parliament was held on October 8, 1991 in the basement of the building of the Croatian oil industry INA .
