Uncarina roeoesliana is a species of the genus Uncarina in the sesame family (Pedaliaceae). The species was named after Walter Röösli from Zurich, a collector and connoisseur of plants ( Uncarina , Pachypodium , Euphorbia ) from Madagascar.

description

Uncarina roeoesliana grows as a small tree with a thin and only sometimes branched trunk from an underground, large and spherical tuber. In individual cases, the tuber can also sprout two stems. The plants reach heights of up to 1.5 meters. The deeply lobed leaves form 5 to 7 blunt lobes, of which the terminal one is the largest. The two lateral lobes are medium in size and the two outer lobes, near the base of the leaf, are small. All flaps can also be slightly lobed again themselves. The leaf blade becomes 16 inches long and 12 inches wide. There are many simple hairs on the green top of the leaf, the longer ones of which usually have a reduced head. At the same time, there are a few mucous glands with a short stem and square head on the top. The underside of the leaf appears greyish green due to the dense covering with long-stalked mucous glands with a somewhat star-shaped head.

The inflorescence consists of cymes with rarely 1, usually 3 to 7 individual flowers, which do not form dense clusters. On the light yellow flowers there are some red lines starting from the throat and running to the flower base. The flower tube is about 3 to 4 inches long.

The side-squeezed fruit is egg-shaped in the side view and has a long, broad and elongated beak . On the approximately 3.5 to 4.5 centimeters long and 1.8 to 2.2 centimeters wide fruit, two different spine shapes are formed. The upper spines often protrude beyond the beak. A large number of simple spines about 3 millimeters long are formed. No false partitions are formed. The obovate seeds are 6 millimeters long and 5 millimeters wide and have 1 millimeter large wings.

Distribution and systematics

Uncarina roeoesliana is endemic to southern Madagascar , in the south of the province of Toliara on dunes.

The species was first described in 1996 by Werner Rauh . The species is closely related to Uncarina grandidieri and Uncarina decaryi .
