Pachypodium is a genus of plants in the subfamily Apocynoideae withinthe dog venom family (Apocynaceae). The translation of Pachypodium is something like "fat foot". The Madagascar palm ( Pachypodium lamerei ), also called thick-footed, ispopularas a houseplant because it is very robust.

Pachypodium styles are succulent plants with water-storing stems . Some reach heights of up to 6 meters. In the growing season there are simple leaves at the tips of the shoots , which fall off in the dry season . In the leaf axils all types with too thorns remodeled stipules reinforced. The thorns are either in pairs or in threes.

The hermaphrodite, five-fold, radial symmetry flowers are relatively large. The five pink to white or yellow petals are fused.

ecology

The species usually need more than ten years from germination to the first flowering.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Pachypodium was established in 1830 by John Lindley . As a model type was Pachypodium tuberosum set. Today the species is synonymous with Pachypodium succulentum .

A synonym of the genus is Belonites E. Mey .

The genus is distributed in South Africa , Namibia and Madagascar . It includes the following types:
