Pachypodium rutenbergianum is a plant type from the genus Pachypodium in the family of Hundsgiftgewächse (Apocynaceae).
description
Pachypodium rutenbergianum is a 3 to 8 m high tree . The trunk reaches a diameter of 60 cm at the base and is bottle-shaped or tapering towards the top. A sparse crown of thick forked branches forms at its tip. The plant is covered with short, conical thorns , with a third, shorter thorn between two 2 to 15 mm long thorns. The leaves are hairless, they are 16 cm long, 4.5 cm wide and have a short stalk.
The flowers are in groups at the shoot tips. They are colored white, 4 to 6 cm long and 3.5 to 7 cm wide. The corolla tube has a diameter of up to 6 mm. The crown lobes are inclined and have a curled edge.
The fruits are cigar-shaped, 16 cm long and 1.5 to 6 cm wide. The seeds have a size of 12 mm.

The species is endemic to Madagascar .
Systematics
The species was first described in 1885 by Wilhelm Vatke .
Three varieties can be distinguished within the species:
- Pachypodium rutenbergianum var. Meridionale H.Perrier ,
- Pachypodium rutenbergianum var. Rutenbergianum
- Pachypodium rutenbergianum var. Sofiense Poiss. Some authors also regard it as an independent species: Pachypodium sofiense (Poiss.) H.Perrier .
