The Madagascar palm ( Pachypodium lamerei ) belongs to the genus Pachypodium within the family of the dog poison plants (Apocynaceae). It is seldom referred to as thick foot and has nothing in common with palm trees , apart from the common German name Madagascar palm . This succulent plant is native to Madagascar and is listed in CITES Appendix II. It is used as a houseplant .

Pachypodium lamerei is a succulent plant that sheds deciduous during the dry season . The conical, barely branched and spiky trunk serves as a water reservoir. It can grow to a height of over 2 meters in culture and up to 6 meters outdoors. The alternately arranged leaves arise with a 3 to 4 cm long petiole on a "wart". The dark green, leathery leaf blade is linear with a length of about 25 cm and a width of about 3 cm and has light central ribs. There are three thorns in each of the leaf axils . The leaves are clumpy heaped on the trunk.
The hermaphrodite flowers are rotationally symmetrical and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five white petals are fused together like a funnel.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
Occurrence
This succulent plant is endemic to the south-central and southern Madagascar and is listed in CITES Appendix II. It is widely cultivated as an indoor plant.

The first description of Pachypodium lamerei was in 1899 by Emmanuel Drake del Castillo in Bulletin du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle , 5, pp. 308–309.
